P-CEP Marching Band LogoThis information applies to Winds and Percussion only. Color Guard has its own uniform policies. Contact Lucas Schmidt for Color Guard info.

PCMB uses four distinct uniforms. The Competition Uniform is the Gray traditional marching uniform worn at all MCBA and BOA Competitions and occasionally at football games. The Football, Practice/Travel and Parade Uniforms consist of various combinations of polos shirts, tshirts, track pants, etc. A complete description of each uniform is below. Some parts of the uniforms are provided by PCMB and some must be purchased by the student either through PCMB or directly from our uniform and spirit wear provider, Canton Embroidery. Details and prices are below.

Uniform Rules

These will be enforced by the Uniform Moms, Chaperones and Directors

  1. NO EATING WHEN WEARING COMPETITION UNIFORM
  2. HAIR MUST BE TUCKED UP IN THE SHAKO AND OFF THE COLLAR. If long, hair must be pinned up in a bun inside the Shako. The Shako must sit correctly on the head when hair is pinned up.
  3. HAIR MUST BE A NATURAL HAIR COLOR.
  4. Black socks that go over the calf are required.
  5. NO NAIL POLISH. You will be asked to remove it.
  6. NO JEWELRY. You will be asked to remove it.
  7. Don’t try to fix a uniform by yourself. Always find a Uniform Mom to help.
  8. Hang your uniform properly in your garment bag, zip up the bag and hang it in the assigned Uniform Closet after every wearing. Jackets (zipped up) and Bibs are hung on the hanger provided. Gloves and Gauntlets should be placed in the back zipper pocket or in the bottom of the bag if there is no back zipper pocket.

Uniform Cleaning, Storage and Maintenance

Competition Uniforms are washed on a set schedule (generally after every other competition and before States and Nationals) by volunteer washer parents. The uniforms are made of polyester and can be washed and partially dried in a washing machine and dryer. For this reason, students must hang up their uniforms properly in their garment bag and hang it in the assigned Uniform Closet after each wearing. Washer parents will collect their assigned uniforms, wash them and return them to the Uniform Closet (along with special treats) in time for the next wearing. Because washer parents go into the garment bags, students should be careful what they put in there because it will be found.

Students are responsible for their own Drill Masters, black socks, member tshirts and compression shorts/tights. Washer parents will not wash these items.

If any uniform item needs repair or refitting, please contact the Uniform Moms immediately. Don’t try to fix a uniform yourself. We are here to help.

  • Competition Uniform is worn for all MCBA and BOA competitions and for select football games, as instructed by the directors.

  • Practice/Travel Uniform is worn for Wednesday practices and when the band travels to competitions on busses unless otherwise instructed by the directors (e.g. on occasion the band may travel short distances in competition uniform or may travel long distances, such as to nationals, in their own comfy clothes).

  • Football Uniform is worn for all PCEP football games unless the directors instruct to wear the Competition Uniform.

  • Parade Uniform is worn for the Memorial Day Parade, 4th of July Parade and other special events as instructed by the directors, e.g. First Lego Competition on April 28 in Detroit.

Individual Uniform Pieces

  • Shako - This is the traditional marching hat worn in competition. Each student will be fitted with a shako, which will be stored in a plastic box in the Uniform Cabinets. Members of the Front Ensemble do not wear shakos.

  • Plume - This is the large grey feather that is worn on the shaiko. Plumes are distributed at the beginning of each performance by the Uniform Moms and collected at the end.

  • Bibs - These are the pants worn with the competition uniform. Each student will be fitted with a set of bibs and any necessary alterations will be taken care of by the Uniform Moms.

  • Jacket - Jackets are worn over the bibs. Each student will be fitted with a jacket and any necessary alterations will be taken care of by the Uniform Moms.

  • Gauntlets - Gauntlets are worn on the lower arm over the jacket. There are two styles of gauntlets. “Fin” gauntlets are worn by the majority of the band, however, certain percussion players wear “Wrap” gauntlets that do not stick out and interfere with their playing. Each student will be fitted with the appropriate style of gauntlets.

  • Gloves - There are two styles of gloves, those with full fingers and fingerless. Students will be instructed which style they are to wear based on the instrument they play. Each student will be issued three pairs of gloves as follows: One pair before the first competition, one pair before State finals and one pair before Nationals. Parents will be invoiced for three pairs of gloves on their PCMB account. During the season, students may receive additional gloves if necessary by seeing a Uniform Mom. Additional pairs of gloves will be invoiced to the PCMB account. Used gloves are available for practice free of charge.

Bibs, Jackets, Gauntlets and Gloves are stored in a numbered PCMB Garment Bag in an assigned Uniform Closet. Washer parents will take the assigned Garment Bags (approx 5 each ) home for uniform washing and return them to the appropriate Uniform Closet as scheduled.

  • Member TShirt - This is a lightweight performance tshirt available in either long sleeve or short sleeve. The member tshirt is worn under bibs in the Competition Uniform, and in the Practice/Travel Uniform. Member tshirts are purchased directly from Canton Embroidery. Parents may purchase as many tshirts as you feel are necessary for your son or daughter, however, one short sleeve and one long sleeve are recommended to account for the change in weather that will occur over the course of a marching season. A set of sample size Member TShirts will be available at uniform fitting to try on so you will know what size to order.

  • Black Compression Shorts/Tights - Black compression shorts and/or tights (as weather dictates) are worn underneath bibs to maintain a smooth, uninterrupted line beneath the uniform. Compression shorts/tights may be purchased on your own from any sources (sporting goods stores, Target, Kohls, etc.)

  • PCEP Polo - This is a performance polo shirt worn in the Football Uniform and Parade Uniform. PCEP Polos are purchased directly from Canton Embroidery. Parents may purchase as many tshirts as you feel are necessary for your son or daughter. Parents may also purchase a PCEP Polo for themselves to wear as spirit wear if they wish. A set of sample size PCEP Polos will be available at the first few marching band rehearsals to try on so you will know what size to order.

  • Track Pants - These are worn in the Football Uniform and Practice/Travel Uniform. The black and white pants allow directors to better see the students marching, drill, spacing, etc. during Wednesday night rehearsals. Track Pants are purchased directly from Canton Embroidery. A set of sample size Track Pants will be available at uniform fitting to try on so you will know what size to order.

  • Khaki Shorts - These are worn with the Parade Uniform. Shorts must be khaki (not brown, olive, sand, etc.) and must have at least a 7 inch inseam. Khaki Shorts must be plain, NO cargo pockets.

  • Member Jacket - Member Jackets are worn with the Practice/Travel Uniform whenever the band travels as a group to maintain a uniform look. They are also worn with the Football Uniform and may be worn with the Parade Uniform in case of colder weather. Most members also wear their Member Jackets on a daily basis during spring competition seasons as a sign of band spirit and pride. Member Jackets are purchased directly from Canton Embroidery. They may be customized with the student’s name on the right chest and instrument on the back. Instrument customizations must meet specifications established by the Uniform Guidelines. Only approved words will be permitted. Canton Embroidery will have a list of approved customizations. A set of sample size Member Jackets will be available at uniform fitting to try on so you will know what size to order.

  • Drill Masters (Dinkles) - these are the black marching shoes worn by all students with the Competition and Football Uniforms. They may also be worn for practice and with the Parade Uniform, although this is not required. Uniform Moms will shine Drill Masters before each competition (after the students are dressed). If Drill Masters become dirty or muddy (yes, we’ve played competitions in some pretty bad rain), students must clean them off and keep them looking nice. A set of sample size Drill Masters will be available at uniform fitting to try on so you will know what size to order. Drill Masters will be ordered for you by PCMB and the cost will be charged to your PCMB account. A shoe storage bag is available for purchase from Canton Embroidery. Although not required, the shoe bag is strongly encouraged as a very helpful way to keep your Drill Masters corralled and clean. It is also highly recommended that you have your student’s name embroidered on the bag by Canton Embroidery as all Drill Masters look alike and especially at National’s time, when 175 or so uniforms are transported to Indianapolis on large carts, it is very easy for them to get mixed up.

  • Black Socks - Students must wear black socks that come above the calf with the Competition Uniform. Black socks must also be worn with the Parade Uniform, although they may be calf, ankle or quarter length.

  • Ball Cap - This is a completely optional purchase from Canton Embroidery. Black PCMB ball caps may be worn with the Practice/Travel Uniform and/or the Football Uniform but they are not required. If students wear a ball cap with these uniforms, it MUST be a PCMB ball cap.

Color Guard

Color Guard has a unique costume worn in competition each year. In addition to that costume, Color Guard members will each purchase black track pants, a summer uniform consisting of shorts and a tshirt and a warm-up jacket (highly encouraged). These items are purchased directly through the Color Guard and are NOT ordered from Canton Embroidery. Please see Lucas Schmidt for further information about Color Guard uniforms.

Final Thoughts

Uniforms serve an important function. They not only assure a neat and orderly appearance, they also promote a feeling of belonging and pride in the institution the uniform represents. Properly wearing our uniforms shows the community how much we care about our band and the hard work we have all put into it. Seeing our kids lined up looking their best, whether in Competition “Grays” or in Football black track pants and jackets, leaves a positive impression of PCMB as a well run, high quality organization deserving of all the state and national accolades it has earned over the years.
