Plymouth-Canton Educational Park band program students selected for the MSBOA All-State Band

CANTON, MI – The Michigan School Band & Orchestra Association (MSBOA) recently announced student placements for the 2018 All-State Band Program. Four students from the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park (P-CEP) band programs were selected for an ensemble, and one student has received honorary mentions.

The All-State program consists of five ensembles selected from recorded auditions. This year, 2,614 students auditioned for 393 slots in the program. The selected students will perform on January 25, 2018 in Grand Rapids at the DeVos Center and Amway Grand Hotel. The event is being held in conjunction with the Michigan Music Conference – a conference for all music teachers in the state of Michigan.

“The All-State Band experience is a chance for some of our advanced players to surround themselves with the best of the best,” said G. Jonathan Thomann, director of Bands at P-CEP. “The audition process alone exposes students to other local musicians outside of Plymouth-Canton Community Schools who are striving for musical excellence and achievement in their community and school. Regardless of discipline, surrounding oneself around others who are at the top of their game inspires growth if approached with the right mindset.”

According to Thomann, to be selected as a member of the All-State Band or to receive an honorable mention is a huge honor, and is something to celebrate as a comprehensive band program. “We are proud of all the students who auditioned, and look forward to our students living up to this legacy in the future. This is the first time in my tenure that we have had four students be selected to represent P-CEP at the Michigan Music Conference as members of the All-State Band and All-State Jazz Band.”

“As participants in the All-State ensemble, the students are immersed in a musical experience that is unique and at a performance level that is unparalleled,” said Michael Wells, associate director of Bands at P-CEP. “Having the opportunity to perform with some of the best high school musicians across the state allows our students to perform literature at the highest level, receive world-class feedback and instruction, and more importantly allows them to form bonds and friendships with students across the state that have common interests and goals. The all-state ensembles are so positively unique and we are incredibly proud of every student that has pursued the opportunity to be involved with these excellent musical experiences.”

Wells added that just participating in the process of applying and auditioning has a very positive impact on the students. “They are asked to prepare excerpts and scales that hundreds of other students across the state are preparing as well. I would compare it to the process of an interview. Everyone may ultimately be asked the same questions, but it is the professionalism, preparation and confidence of the students that will ultimately affect the outcome.”
