Contact Mr. Hartwick

John Hartwick earned his Bachelors of Music degree with a concentration in Trumpet Performance at Wayne State University, where he studied with Detroit Symphony Orchestra trumpeter, and Plymouth alumnus, William Lucas. While in college, John was principal trumpet of the WSU Symphony Orchestra, and the Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra.

John has played trumpet in the Detroit metropolitan area for over 20 years as both a freelance musician and a long-time member of several community orchestras. Currently, he is principal trumpet of the Michigan Philharmonic and holds positions with the Dearborn Symphony and Motor City Symphony (formerly Warren Symphony). John has performed with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Michigan Opera Theatre, Fisher Theatre Orchestra, Meadow Brook Theater, Oakland Symphony, and is a frequent substitute musician with many other orchestras in Southeastern Michigan. Besides orchestral and theater work, John has performed as a side-musician with several national touring acts appearing in and around the Detroit area. Most recently he has performed with the indie rock groups My Brightest Diamond (Shara Worden), and Belle & Sebastian.

John’s involvement with marching arts began with his high school marching band (Avondale, 1988-1991). At age 15, he began marching with the Northern Aurora drum & bugle corps from Saginaw, MI. John’s drum corps career eventually brought him to California, where he marched two seasons (1994, 1995) as a soloist with the Blue Devils drum & bugle corps. After aging-out of the activity, John was a brass instructor for Northern Aurora in 1996, and was brass caption head for the Americanos drum & bugle corps from Appleton, Wisconsin in 2002.

John has taught marching band since his senior year in high school. After graduation, John went on to teach several marching bands in Southeastern Michigan. In 1997, he was hired by band director Alan Lounsbury to teach the brass section at Lakeland High School in White Lake, MI. There he continued as brass caption head and wind music arranger for the better part of a decade. Recently, after an eight-year hiatus, John returned to the activity as a consultant with the Lake Orion High School Marching Band in 2013, and served as their brass caption head for the 2014 marching season.

Besides playing trumpet and teaching marching band, John enjoys arranging music and is an active freelance music educator, teaching private lessons and working with many area school music programs. He is also an adjunct professor of music at Henry Ford College, where he plays with the internationally acclaimed Henry Ford Big Band.
